Down Syndrome Association, North Bay (formerly Sonoma County Down Syndrome Support)
The Down Syndrome Association, North Bay (DSA) is an affiliate of both national organizations – National Down Syndrome Society and National Down Syndrome Congress.
Volunteer programs include: Greeting families in hospitals with Hope Baskets and information, fall and spring seminars, phone consultations for pregnant parents, a mentoring program for high school seniors and community involvement, monthly support groups, bowling parties, dances, parents' nights out, and grant program, all due to fundraising and advocacy efforts of the Buddy Walk.
The money raised during the Project Zin weekend will help with all of the above programs and events. Specifically, this grant program will help families send their kids to camps, receive services that have been cut due to state budgets, and start some new focus areas based on parents' needs.

A Letter from Clay and Carrie Mauritson
Our oldest son Brady was diagnosed with Down syndrome in September, 2010 at the age of 2 ½. The diagnosis was emotionally devastating for our family. At the time, it felt as if every parent’s worst fears had come true. Little did we know what an incredible blessing this diagnosis would be and how it would profoundly change our lives.
That being said, I don’t know how we would have made it through those first couple of months without the tremendous support of the Down Syndrome Association, North Bay (DSA). They provided desperately needed educational resources, medical recommendations, and emotional support.
Unfortunately, our story is not unique; the DSA provides these resources to countless families in and around Sonoma County. Their mission is simple: To promote advocacy, raise awareness, further educational pursuits, and support research for people with Down syndrome and their families.
While the group is derived of some of the most caring, passionate, and dedicated people I have ever met, they can only do so much with limited funds and the problem is getting worse: what little Federal and State funding that has been available is in jeopardy due to the current fiscal climate and economic crisis.
My wife and I are committed to raising
awareness and advocating for all people with disabilities, especially
those with Down syndrome. Please join us for this fantastic Zinfandel event
and help us raise money for an amazing cause. We hope to see you there.
—Clay & Carrie Mauritson

What is Down Syndrome?
Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that causes delays in physical and intellectual development. It occurs in one in every 691 live births. Individuals with Down Syndrome have 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46. In most people with Down Syndrome, there is an extra copy of Chromosome 21 (also called trisomy 21 because there are three copies of this chromosome instead of two), which changes the body and brain’s normal development.
Down Syndrome is the most frequently occurring chromosomal disorder. It is not related to race, nationality, religion or socioeconomic status. The most important fact to know is that very little separates individuals with Down Syndrome from those without it.
For more information on Down Syndrome, please visit The National Association for Down Syndrome.

ZINFANDEL MAGNUMS: MAURITSON WINES AND BRULIAM WINES (4 BOTTLE PACKAGE)
Donor: Bruliam Wines and Mauritson Wines
This amazing Zinfandel lot includes two magnums of the 2009 Mauritson Rockpile "Cemetary Vineyard" Zinfandel and two magnums of the 2010 Bruliam Wines Rocky Ridge Vineyard, Rockpile Zinfandel
2009 Mauritson Rockpile "Cemetary Vineyard" Zinfandel, 1.5L (Value: $180)
The Mauritson Family's Rockpile Ridge Vineyards are located at nearly 1,200 ft elevation in the Rockpile appellation. The Cemetery block gets its name from the unusual outcropping of rock at the bottom of the vineyard that resembles giant headstones. The area of the ranch has been called the Cemetery for over 140 years, dating back to when the family ran sheep on the property. The Cemetery Vineyard is planted in serpentine and shale based soils which is a result of straddling the Rodgers Creek Fault, one of the more active earthquake faults in Northern California. With a southwestern sun exposure, 15 to 20 degree slope and poor soil composition, the wine is everything you might expect: intense, powerful and complex.
There is no doubt that 2009 was one of the best vintages for Zinfandel in the last ten years, and the Cemetery Vineyard is no exception. The extremely small crop was a function of three years of drought, resulting in incredibly intense flavors and great structure. The warmer than average growing season yielded ripe fruit, and the nose is everything you would expect: fresh berry cobbler, raspberry jam, hints of black pepper and sweet French oak. Lush and full on the front palate, the tannins are supple and round throughout. The rich cobbler flavors dominate the mid palate, and the finish is characterized by spice and mineral notes. Typical of the Cemetery Vineyard, this wine will age beautifully for the next five to seven years.

ZINFANDEL MAGNUMS: CARLISLE WINERY & VINEYARDS AND TURLEY WINE CELLARS (2 BOTTLE PACKAGE)
Donor: Carlisle Winery & Vineyards and Turley Wine Cellars
This amazing Zinfandel lot includes magnums of the 2009 Carlisle Russian River Valley Carlisle Vineyard Zinfandel and the 2008 Turley Wine Cellars Ueberroth Vineyard, Paso Robles, Zinfandel.
2009 Carlisle Russian River Valley Carlisle Vineyard Zinfandel, 1.5L
After the devastating frost of 2008, yields of these 82-year-old vines bounced back nicely in 2009 to 1.6 tons to the acre. This was certainly one of the more nerve-racking picks of the year, finishing under stormy skies just hours before the heavens opened up. After a five-day cold soak, the must was inoculated with two different strains of yeast. Fourteen days later the wine was pressed to all French oak, 25% new. As usual, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only 12 magnums bottled.
www.carlislewinery.com
2008 Turley Wine Cellars Ueberroth Vineyard, Paso Robles, Zinfandel, 1.5L
The 2008 Ueberroth is bold in every way. Inky, dark ruby color greets you in the glass. The aromatics are engaging and demonstrate well the flavors of west side Paso Robles Zinfandel - bright, pungent and juicy red & black fruits. There are hints of cinnamon, cocoa powder and pepper, as well. Well defined attack, strong mid-palate and penetrating/persistent finish, this is a lovely wine and should age beautifully.

GROOM WINES BUSH BLOCK ZINFANDEL VERTICAL (4 BOTTLE PACKAGE)
2007 Groom Bush Block Zinfandel
2008 Groom Bush Block Zinfandel
2009 Groom Bush Block Zinfandel
2010 Groom Bush Block Zinfandel
Groom wines is considered one of the early pioneers of Zinfandel in Australia. Zinfandel cuttings from Davis California were planted at Groom Wines Bush Block Vineyard in 2001. The vines are grown in sandy clay soils in the traditional Bush Vine (Head Pruned) method. Since the first commercial production in 2006 Groom Zinfandel has consistently scored between 91 and 94 points from Australia's premier wine reviewer James Halliday in the Australian Wine Companion. The wines are distinctively zinfandel but uniquely Australian.
Value: $120
RAVENSWOOD SINGLE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL MAGNUM VERTICAL (3 BOTTLE PACKAGE)
Ravenswood has been working with the Teldeschi family and their famed Dry Creek Valley vineyards since the 1970s. The mostly old vines that make up Teldeschi Vineyard are Zinfandel, Carignane, and Petite Sirah, a melange typical of older vineyard plantings in California. The three varieties are fermented separately and blended to taste, designed to bring out the best of the vineyard - power and big flavors.
Value: $300
ZINFANDEL DOUBLE MAGNUMS: RIDGE VINEYARDS, ROBERT BIALE VINEYARDS AND SEGHESIO FAMILY VINEYARDS (3 BOTTLE PACKAGE)
Donor: Ridge Vineyards, Robert Biale Vineyards and Seghesio Family Vineyards
This amazing Zinfandel lot includes double magnums of three extraordinary wines: the 1998 Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel, the 2009 Biale Monte Rosso Vineyard Zinfandel and the 2010 Seghesio Family Vineyards Sonoma Zinfandel.
1998 Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel, 3 L (Value: $300)
Since 1962, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare sites where climate, soil, and varietal are ideally matched. The winery's aim is to guide the natural process, using traditional methods to produce exceptional wines from distinctive fruit.
www.ridgewine.com
2009 Biale Monte Rosso Vineyard Zinfandel, 3 L (Value: $325)
The historic Monte Rosso on the Mayacamas Mountains above Sonoma could be classified as a Californian "Grand Cru." This rare 3 liter bottle of Biale Zinfandel from Monte Rosso is from the oldest vines on the vineyard dating to the 1880's. Since their first vintage in 1991, the Biale winery has created a series of a dozen small-vineyard Zinfandels from historic family vineyards in Napa and Sonoma and, under the direction of new winemaker Steve Hall, has become regarded by collectors, "Zin geeks", authors, wine writers, and sommeliers as among the very finest and most sought after producers of Zinfandel - being dubbed in 2010 by Wine Spectator as Zinfandel Grand Masters. The experts concur: Biale, along with a few select producers, has elevated California Zinfandel to that of internationally recognized status.

2010 Seghesio Family Vineyards Sonoma Zinfandel, 3L (Value: $100)
Seghesio Family Vineyards' roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel, as our founder, Edoardo Seghesio, first planted this historic varietal on our Alexander Valley Home Ranch in 1895. Today, we share his passion as we farm over 300 acres of estate Zinfandel in Alexander and Dry Creek valleys. This wine combines sites that have produced Zinfandel for over a century with newer sites that utilize proprietary clones and the most advanced viticultural practices.

First Annual Project Zin Recap
On October 29th, Winemaker Clay Mauritson and Chef Charlie Palmer hosted the First Annual Project Zin at Hotel Healdsburg. This sold-out wine event gathered some of the most sought after Zinfandels paired with decadent bites from Chef Palmer and other local Sonoma County chefs.
The event featured eight incredible zinfandels from wineries including Turley, Ridge, Robert Biale, Martinelli, Carlisle, A. Rafanelli, Seghesio and Mauritson. Wines were paired alongside tastings such as Zin Poached Ribeye with Smoked Potato Gratin and Black Garlic Vinaigrette from Charlie Palmer and Dustin Valette. Many local restaurants joined in on the fun, including Willi’s who offered Spice Roasted Bone Marrow, Short Rib Marmalade, toasted Brioche and John Ash & Co. who served Painted Hills NY Roulades with haricot verts, brown butter parsnip puree and a hoisin-zinfandel reduction.
In addition to all the fun, we were able to raise money for one very important organization - the Sonoma County Down Syndrome Support Group. We are happy to report that we raised over $50,000 for the SCDSS! Learn more here.
