One of the best things about summers in Healdsburg is the “Tuesdays in the Plaza” music series. It’s kind of like a big town picnic with fantastic live music. All kinds of music, actually. From Latin to Jazz to Big Band, Jam Band, Rynthm & Blues and everything in between. Well, maybe not everything. (Sorry Britney). Tonight, catch Eilen Jewell on her national tour (6-8pm). She was recently heralded in the Boston Phoenix as the Best National Singer/Songwriter, and is a rising star in the floksy, bluesy, rootsy world. Next week, the music series welcomes a funky, latin, jazzy jam band that is sure to get your feet moving – Vinyl.
The Plaza is just steps from the Hotel, and to make things so easy you feel like a local, we’re offering a Tuesdays in the Plaza Special Package. Here’s the scoop. You get…
- A night in a deluxe king or double queen guest room
- A special picnic kit including chairs, blanket, a chilled bottle of wine, and a selection of local cheeses.
- A gourmet harvest breakfast and valet parking.
All for just $325. You can’t beat that with a stick. So live it up like a local. And call to make your reservation. (Tuesday nights only, now thru August 31).

Can you taste the difference between a Zinfandel from Dry Creek Valley and say, neighboring Russian River Valley? Or Alexander Valley, for that matter? If not, no worries. While some folks are perfectly happy believing a Zin is a Zin is a Zin, others come to Healdsburg in hot pursuit of a deeper understanding of the grape’s complexities. And for these people, we’re excited to offer a new wine series at our Dry Creek Kitchen that’s at once fun and educational. It’s the…
Sonoma County Wine Pioneers Series.
Here’s the scoop: each segment in the Series consists of an interactive seminar and wine tasting with legendary Sonoma County winemakers – as well as up and coming stars. Held monthly (thru November), these Saturday afternoon seminars are designed to be approachable and unpretentious to the novice wine lover, but also engaging to the connoisseur. We kick things off this weekend, June 12th, with “3 Valleys of Zinfandel,” a celebration of Northern California’s flagship grape. And to help answer the question at the top of this post, we’ve invited Shelly Fehlman of A. Rafanelli, Eric Sussman of Radio Coteau, and Joe Healy of Bella Vineyards. These savvy wine pros will illuminate the subtle nuances between Zinfandels from Sonoma’s signature appellations, and they’ll be happy to answer any of your questions. The key is in creating a fun, interactive environment for all.
The seminar is followed by a deluxe tasting of delicious Zinfandels, plus a 3-course prix fixe dinner at Dry Creek Kitchen. Seminar wines may also be purchased at retail price and enjoyed at dinner with no additional corkage fee. Here’s a complete list of upcoming seminars. (Next up… “Sonoma County Sparklers.”)
Cost: $65 per person (not including tax and gratuity)
Seating is limited to ensure an intimate experience, so call now to make YOUR reservation: 707.431.0330.

The Beyond Organic Spring Treatments are now at The Spa. And your new HH blogger can honestly say that the Meyer Lemon Sage Massage was among the better fifty minutes of his life. Sixty actually, as I opted for the optional ten minute face treatment that featured biodynamic serums and toners and cleansers and creams – each one smelling and feeling better than the last. Citrus has long been coveted as an astringent and detoxifier. And after a long winter marked by my share of rich foods, this Spring Treatment – specially designed to break down some toxins and oils on the skin’s surface – couldn’t have come at a better time.
Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I have never reviewed a massage. Or been asked to for that matter. Men’s Health once arranged for me to have Botox injected in my armpits for a comedic essay I wrote about sweating, but so far that’s been the extent of my wellness reportage. Still, I’ve had enough massages to know that this one is something special. Much of it was due to the expertise of masseuse, Marjorie Sisneros-Smith. I’d heard she was outstanding and I wasn’t disappointed. And the heated massage table and chic atmosphere sure didn’t hurt. But what made this experience unique was the purity of the products used throughout the treatment.
Lemon sage body milk… lemon verbena hydrosol… and all the other stuff that smelled and felt so soooo good… all of it… certified biodynamic. Made with love by Sebastopol herbalist Ann Wiant-Lyon of Stella Flora Botanicals. These aren’t the scented massage oils or sprays that you usually encounter. They’re not scented as much as they’re infused with different flowers and herbs and essences. The idea is that while your body is rubbed into aromatic bliss, your skin is deeply absorbing all the nutrients and healing properties of the plants. While the premise initially struck me as a bit New Agey, afterward my skin was unusually soft and spectacular. I felt refreshed and rejuvenated, like spring itself. Which got me thinking, why not give my skin the the purest possible ingredients from a local artisan herbalist… all the time?
Luckily, The Spa sells Stella Flora Botanicals. And a host of other great products.
For a different take on the Beyond Organic Spring Treatments, here’s an incisive review from a wellness expert.

Jared Leto in a Chan Luu Silk/Cashmere Scarf
This past Saturday, the Hotel Healdsburg was thrilled to host a Spa Boutique Trunk Show featuring selections from internationally acclaimed fashion designer Chan Luu, and celebrated L.A. knitwear brand, Three Dots.
The Chan Luu designs included her scarves, necklaces and a slew of her iconic wrap bracelets, cleverly displayed on 3/8-inch nap paint rollers. You may have seen these fun bracelets while standing in line at the grocery store. Not that that you can buy them there, of course. Rather, when flipping through those celebrity mags we all secretly love. Because everyone from Kate Hudson to Lady Gaga are sporting them these days.
And Three Dots offered several pieces of their super stylish and outrageously comfy collection of women’s wear. The brand has a great back story with its modest beginning. Founded in California in 1995, Three Dots started making fabulously fitted knit tees. Three styles, three sizes, twelve colors. That’s it. The key to their instant success? Great fabrics, inspired design, fastidious construction and the perfect fit. Made entirely in the U.S.A., the luxury brand has expanded their collection to include everything from cami jumpsuits to tanks, skirts, cotton vests and hooded dresses. All of which has caught the eye of NY fashion editors and Hollywood starlets alike.
Says Allison Paige, the Retail Consultant for the Hotel Healdsburg Spa Boutique, “The trunk show was nothing short of a coup. Not only did it showcase to the community that the Spa is a great resource for comfortable, stylish clothes and accessories, but for these iconic brands to send reps all the way up from L.A. was incredible.” Guests at the event were treated to exclusive discounts on these premium designs and… Spa Packages. And wine, of course. Quivera generously donated plenty of their incredible 2009 Grenache Rose’ for the event. And though Mother Nature said “Nope!” to our plan to host the Trunk Show in the olive grove next to the pool, fortunately the Hotel has enough event spaces that we were able to move the party inside to the Grange Room.
Special thanks to brand ambassadors Lisette Zolfia (Three Dots) and Shannon Phillips (Chan Luu) for making the trek to Healdsburg for this fantastic event.
